About DIPG

What is DIPG? Understanding a Rare and Aggressive Childhood Cancer

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is a devastating and aggressive brain tumour that predominantly affects children aged 4 to 11. This rare condition arises in the pons, a vital area of the brainstem responsible for essential functions such as breathing, swallowing, balance, and facial movement. Its location in the brainstem makes DIPG particularly challenging to treat, as this area is densely packed with critical nerves and connections.

A Diffuse and Inoperable Condition

The term “diffuse” highlights how DIPG tumours spread throughout the pons, intertwining with healthy tissue. This diffuse nature means the tumour cannot be surgically removed without risking severe and life-threatening damage to the brainstem. Traditional treatment options are limited, and the prognosis for children diagnosed with DIPG remains poor.

No Cure Yet

Currently, there is no cure for DIPG. Despite advancements in medical research and cancer treatments, effective therapies for this condition have been elusive. This is largely due to its complex location, rapid progression, and the lack of comprehensive research funding dedicated to paediatric brain tumours.

The Leading Cause of Brain Tumour Deaths in Children

DIPG is thought to account for approximately 80% of all childhood brain tumour-related deaths. It represents a significant unmet need in paediatric cancer research, with families often left without answers to the most pressing questions: What causes DIPG? Why does it target young children?

Raising Awareness and Driving Research

DIPG is a condition that is underfunded, under-researched, and poorly understood. More research and awareness are crucial to uncovering the underlying causes and developing innovative treatments. By shining a light on DIPG, we can move closer to a future where children diagnosed with this disease have better outcomes and hope for a cure.

At Billy’s Battalion, we are committed to raising awareness, funding research, and supporting families affected by DIPG. Together, we can honour the memories of children like Billy while fighting for a brighter future for others.
